Agra Rugs

The main markets for shopping for rugs and carpets in Agra are near the Taj Mahal complex. These areas include Sadar Bazaar, Kinari Bazaar and Munro Road. The U.P State Emporium called Gangotri at the Taj Mahal Complex, offers a range of rugs and carpets. The Shilpagram crafts village is another venue where rugs and carpets are on sale, directly by the craftsmen themselves. While buying rugs, remember to look for the "Rugmark" a certification that ensures the rug has been woven using fair trade practices, including no use of child labor. You're sure to find many rugs and carpets that you'll want to take back with you, after shopping for rugs in Agra India.

                    Agra Rugs

Agra Rugs Description :

Agra, whither travelers journey to gaze upon the beauty of the Taj Mahal, has its carpet industry too — an industry the early history of which Mr. Robinson recounts in this wise: "The Indus valley had always obtained rugs from the neighboring Afghans on the north and the Beluchee tribes on the south of the river; but as the Mohammedan power became established in central India, the necessity was found for local manufacture of carpets too large to be carried by camels or even by elephants. Thus Agra, Jhansi and other places east became seats of the manufacture".

In point of size and thickness the Agra carpets of today are fit successors to those of the olden time. They are of enormous weight and solidity. The designs are similar to those common in the time of Mongol ascendancy, the cone forms playing an important part. For a long time after the establishment of the weaving in jails and the industrial school, the carpets were nearly all in a monotone of two colors, green or blue, with pale cream color. More recently the use of browns and purples was begun. The central field in the later rugs presents an angular form of some Mohammedan device, and the border, very often, the transverse arrangement of the pear shape spoken of as being a feature of certain Khorassans. In the jails, where the manufacture is still carried on, cotton carpets are made, thick and heavy like the woolen ones.

Agra rugs take their name from the city of Agra in India (home of the Taj Mahal). Not coincidentally, Agra is the city settled by Mogul ruler Akbar The Great (1556-1606 AD) - credited with bringing a great deal of art (including rug weaving) to the subcontinent. The Agra rugs below are part of a range of antique designs revived several years ago to meet growing interest in natural dye, handspun-wool rugs with expansive, curvilinear patterns found only in the subcontinent...more. Vegetable Dye Rug Collection :
These beautiful rugs are replicas of 18th & 19th century rugs. Utilizing all natural dyes and hand knotted of 100% premium wool, they are washed in tea and herbs to produce a beautiful antique looking rug for today's decor. All sizes are available from scatter rugs to palace size. Veg dye rugs are made in all the major rug producing countries - India (Jaipur & Agra), Pakistan (Peshawer), Egypt, China, and Iran. Each has a specific look and unique price point.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
S&H RUGS GALLERY buys from each of these countries but we do not maintain a programmed line (a programmed line is when a rug is made repetitively over and over in multiple sizes. This is done so that many people can buy the same rug shown in one picture.) Each rug we inventory is "one of a kind". The examples shown here are intended only to give you a sense of what is possible in veg dye rugs. If you are interested in any of these carpets, contact us for specific images of rugs currently available in your size requirement. Our inventory is large and changing on a daily basis.
